Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte

Is it fall yet? Okay, I know, I know it’s technically not but with the weather we’ve been having up here in Minnesota it sure does feel like it! I have to admit fall is my absolute favorite season for a number of reasons including but not limited to: all things pumpkin, crisp fall air, gorgeous leaves changing color, jeans & hoodies, ‘nuggles with The Farmer, fires, the return of heartier food & of course harvest on the farm!
This morning I brought back one of our favorite fall items; Homemade Pumpkin Spice Lattes! Starbucks PSL ain’t got nothing on this drink y’all! I will admit I’m a recovering PSL addict; but once you try this drink made with real ingredients including real pumpkin you’ll quickly forget about the cloyingly sweet bux version- I promise!

This drink is absolutely perfect for crisp fall mornings & lazy weekends. It’s lovely & a staple at our home throughout the fall/winter seasons – so excited it’s back! 
Here’s what you’ll need to make just enough for you & your favorite farmer:
  • 2 shots of espresso (1 per cup)
  • 1½ cups of whole milk (oh so naughty!)
  • ½ cup heavy cream (whipped topping)
  • 2-3 tbsp pumpkin puree, depending on the pumpkin flavor desired 
  • 3 tbsp local maple syrup
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice 
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 
Let’s get started!
  1. Brew the espresso; shout out to Nespresso for making life easy; you’re looking for 1 shot per cup.
  2. If espresso is too bold for you you can definitely substitute for coffee here. Once brewed and portioned, set aside.
  3. Meanwhile in a small pot or saucepan, combine the milk, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla extract, and pumpkin over medium heat. Whisk together until heated through & the milk just begins to simmer on the sides.
  4. Take the mixture off the heat & divide evenly between the two cups (on top of the espresso).
  5. For your frothed topping you have a few options depending on the equipment you have; once again Nespresso makes life easy peasy with their Aeroccino that froths in seconds – praise the lord! If you don’t have one of these, you can froth a number of ways including a hand held froth wand or even your French Press!
  6. Once your heavy cream (indulgent A.F!) or milk if you’re choosing to be a bit less naughty is frothed dollop it on top of your prepared cups.
  7. Garnish Option: Additional pumpkin spice; cinnamon or even fresh nutmeg would be lovely here (Note: nutmeg will react with the foam/frothed milk so it won’t look as lovely but it will still taste just as good!)

  1. I love the scarves, sweaters and corduroy pants and the changing of colors in the leaves and the PUMPKIN edible – EVERYTHING!! ( I need to try that recipe when it finally gets chili down here)

  2. Made this and was totally smitten!! So I added vanilla, spices, and syrup to the remaining pumpkin (from the can) and stored it in the fridge. Now, once I have espresso brewed, I just add a couple of tablespoons of the pumpkin mixture to a some milk, then simmer/froth/combine. Perfection!
